Emergency Dentistry Q&A

What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry at Ideal Dental of Tucson is available 24/7, so you and your family get the care you need. About 22% of the US population has a dental emergency at some point in their lives, including:

  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Chipped tooth
  • Broken tooth
  • Broken crown or veneer
  • Other broken oral appliance
  • Gum or tooth infection
  • Gum or oral tissue injury
  • Oral bleeding
  • Severe toothache

When you have a dental emergency, call — or have someone else call — the Ideal Dental of Tucson office immediately.

What should I do if I have a knocked-out tooth?

If your tooth is completely knocked out, first gently pick it up by the crown (the part that shows above your gums). Do not touch the root at all. Rinse for just a few seconds with cool — not warm or hot — water. Rinse your mouth with water, too.

Place the tooth back in its socket, and bite down on damp gauze. If the tooth doesn’t fit or if your child is so young they could swallow the tooth, put the tooth in a small jar filled with milk. If you don’t have milk, spit into the jar. If you don’t have a jar, cover the tooth with your saliva and plastic wrap.

If you get to the Ideal Dental of Tucson office within 30 minutes, the team may be able to re-insert your tooth so that it can take root again.

What should I do if I chip or break a tooth?

If you chip or break your tooth, collect the fragments, and put them in a jar or plastic wrap covered with milk or saliva. Rinse your mouth, then bite on a piece of wet gauze to control pain and bleeding. We may be able to restore your tooth with bonding materials.

What if my mouth is bleeding?

If you’re bleeding profusely, head to the emergency room. If your bleeding is minor, control it with cold compresses until you can get to the Ideal Dental of Tucson office.

What if my jaw is dislocated?

If you think your jaw is dislocated or broken, tie it shut with a scarf and go to the emergency room. After your jaw has been treated, come to Ideal Dental of Tucson for dental evaluation.

Don’t panic in a dental emergency: The Ideal Dental of Tucson team is always ready to help. Walk in during office hours or call any time.
