Bridges Q&A

What are dental bridges?

Bridges are permanent artificial teeth that fill in gaps left by missing teeth and restore your beautiful smile. They are often made of two crowns, or caps, that fit over your natural teeth, attached to an artificial tooth in between. Implant-supported bridges are also available at Ideal Dental of Tucson.

What are the benefits of dental bridges?

Some of the numerous benefits associated with dental bridges include:

  • No more gaps
  • Clearer speech
  • Easier chewing
  • A more aesthetically pleasing smile
  • A better bite
  • Improved facial symmetry
  • More self-confidence

Bridges can give you the full set of beautiful teeth you desire without downtime.

Is a bridge right for me?

To determine if a dental bridge is right for you, Dr. Ruiz and Dr. Williams review your medical and dental history and examine your teeth. They also take dental X-rays to let you know if a bridge or other dental restoration is the right fit for you.

What happens during bridge placement?

Bridge placement is typically a two-step process. During your first appointment, Dr. Ruiz or Dr. Williams prepare your adjacent teeth by lightly and conservatively reshaping them to make room for the 3-piece porcelain bridge. With implant-supported bridges, he surgically places metal posts into your jawbone and allows the implants to heal.

The doctors digitally scan your mouth to create a new custom bridge and make a custom temporary bridge to wear in the meantime. When your permanent bridge is ready, they'll makes sure it fits properly and cements two adjacent crowns to your natural teeth or attaches a bridge to dental implants.

How should I care for my new bridge?

Dental bridges can last up to 10 years or longer if you care for them properly. To take care of your natural teeth and bridge, brush twice daily using fluoride toothpaste and floss every day. Eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in added sugar.

Don’t chew on hard candy, popcorn kernels, or other hard objects and avoid opening packages with your teeth. See Dr. Ruiz, Dr. Williams and their team every six months, or more often if your bridge becomes loose or damaged, for routine cleanings and dental exams.
